El estudio de la filosofía, la lectura de las ideas sistematizadas previamente, no sirven para otra cosa más que para reforzar o modificar las propias ideas, re-estimar conceptos, ampliar o reducir nociones: someter a crítica el propio pensamiento. Las ideas no son transmisibles, su comunicación deja en el camino el contenido, perdido en el acto mismo de la interpretación. Filosofía es, en efecto, filosofar, cuestionar ideas mediante ideas, utilizar la razón para razonar sobre los principios racionales y las lógicas rectoras del pensamiento, intentando descubrir, yendo aún más allá, los fondos irracionales que energizan desde la oscuridad. No recibo las concepciones del otro por más que las comunique de una manera clara y precisa; no tengo posibilidad de medir y pesar, de sentir y vivenciar, las ideas ajenas. El pensamiento es estrictamente individual y, a lo sumo, su comunicación impulsa la reflexión, pero de ninguna manera mediante la aprehensión pura de las ideas, sino por intermedio de lo que el sujeto receptor decodifica del mensaje, es decir, de aquello que, movido por sus creencias y valoraciones personales y por su cuerpo ideológico precedente, decide aprovechar y considerar para desarrollar una particular actividad intelectual. Sobre los demás solo puede interpretar. El entendimiento es, de algún modo, parcial o, mejor dicho, subjetivado. De ese modo, una de las tareas centrales de la filosofía, deduzco, consiste en la revisación crítica de las categorías conceptuales y esquemas de pensamiento utilizados a la hora de poner en actividad la inteligencia; remover el fondo racional, revelando las consignas preestablecidas y los supuestos nodales que inspiran al pensamiento. Ese ejercicio de conocimiento racional no puede olvidarse de las influencias irracionales en la actividad intelectiva, de la aportación de elementos no conscientes en esa acción del pensar y su carácter profundamente angustiante, ya que se trata de poner en cuestionamiento, nada más ni nada menos, las representaciones mentales y su fuente de construcción, que son precisamente constitutivas del sujeto, motores vitales del individuo. Esa es la principal complicación de la filosofía pero, a su mismo tiempo, su mayor grandeza.
Todo conocimiento implica una duda; no se puede conocer aquello de lo que no se puede dudar. Es una relación necesaria, una oposición constituyente de cada una de las partes. La duda se constituye en relación al conocimiento y, de la misma manera, el conocimiento en la duda. Porque puedo dudar, puedo conocer y porque puedo conocer, estoy en condiciones de dudar. Solo conozco aquello que es sometido a duda, aquello sobre lo que puedo preguntarme. Todo lo que puede ser enunciado, existe y, por lo tanto, es cognoscible. Hablar de la cognoscibilidad de las cosas no acarrea, sin embargo, hablar de la universalidad de ese conocimiento. El conocimiento es estrictamente particular, aunque no se trata de un relativo. El conocimiento no es relativo, lo que es relativo, en todo caso, es la realidad. Relativa a mí, a mi propia circunstancia.
