¡Vaya! Sin comerlo ni beberlo, ya estamos en el capítulo dos. Hasta ahora hemos tratado de dar una contestación al misterioso interrogante de la vida. Hemos expuesto nuestros puntos de vista a la hora de decir quién somos. Pues ahora tengo ganas (así soy yo) de cambiar de tema.
Aunque los ingleses consideran que ser y estar es lo mismo (si no me equivoco, usan el mismo verbo, “be”, para referirse a las dos cosas), nosotros, y no porque seamos españoles, consideramos que estos dos verbos indican cosas muy distintas. Es de cajón que estar transmite la idea de “hallarse en un lugar” (nuestro agradecimiento a la RAE).
Pero, ¿dónde estamos? En vez de quebrarnos la cabeza, vamos a recurrir a la prueba que nunca falla. Los niños pequeños. Dicen que los niños y los borrachos nunca mienten, así que por algo será… El caso es que la opinión de un infante sería más o menos así: Estamos en España. Luego, estamos en Europa. También estamos en la Tierra. Y todo esto está en el universo.
“El universo”. Yo me imagino una serie infinita de galaxias, nebulosas, estrellas… en todo su esplendor. Sin embargo, los de la Marvel veían el universo como una mina por explotar. Cierto, no eran terroristas, pero le daban forma a cualquier idea, por pequeña que fuera, y más si era sobre el cosmos.
En esta ocasión, a los mendas les dio por ingeniar un individuo plateado y con una tabla de surf como vehículo (¡ya basta de naves espaciales!). Su nombre fue “Silver Surfer” (surfista plateado, ay que ver los nombrecitos que se inventan), que se suele traducir como “Estela Plateada”. Pero, ¿cómo surgió el elemento éste?
Stan Lee, un famoso guionista, creó una historia que trataba sobre un devorador de planetas, llamado Galactus, que se dedicaba al bonito hobbie de engullir planetas con vida. No obstante, cuando un dibujante vio el guión, quiso darle caña e inventó un personaje que serviría como heraldo al señor “me gusta mucho comer”. Galactus le dio a su mensajero la capacidad de dominar el poder cósmico. Pero, ¿por qué Silver Surfer le ofrecía sus servicios a Galactus, así, sin más? Bueno, en realidad, la historia se remonta a mucho antes. Silver Surfer, por aquel entonces Norrin Radd, era un chaval normal; era astrónomo, estaba enamorado y vivía bien. El problema llegó cuando el antes mencionado Galactus apareció por su planeta.
-Toc, toc.
-¿Quién es?
-El lobo.
-¿Qué quieres?
-Vengo a comerme tu planeta.
En cuanto supo esto, Norrin hizo un trato con Galactus (como si de un pacto con el Diablo se tratara): si no te meriendas mi planeta, prometo dedicarme a buscar planetas para que sacies tu apetito.
Al principio, Silver Surfer le presentaba a su nuevo amo planetas sin vidas que los habitaran, es decir, le daba “verduritas” (en el fondo, era buena gente). Pero a Galactus le gustaba la carne, así que manipuló a Surfer para que este le buscara planetas con toda clase de vida. Y al final vino a parar a la Tierra. Nada, estaba de paso, venía para inspeccionar nuestra morada, para saber si era comestible. No obstante, cuando conoció a los Cuatro Fantásticos (en particular la Mujer Invisible), cambió su parecer. Se dio cuenta de que había sido utilizado por Galactus y se rebeló contra él. Pero el señor Galactus no se queda de brazos cruzados y lo confina en la Tierra a través de una barrera que Surfer no podía traspasar. Con la ayuda de Los Cuatro Fantásticos (para algo están los amigos) logró cruzarla, pero la alegría se convirtió en tristeza cuando supo que su planeta, Zenn-la, había sido el almuerzo de del “devorador de planetas”.
A partir de ese momento, Silver Surfer empleó su tiempo en navegar por el universo (cual alma que vaga por el desierto…). Después de su experiencia en la Tierra, conoció a muchos más personajes, de los cuales también había muchos enemigos. En una ocasión, se encontró con Thanos, un peligroso oponente al que no pudo derrotar sin la ayuda de Adam Warlock. También se enfrentó con Morg, el nuevo y loco heraldo de Galactus. Pero también cayó rendido ante Silver Surfer y los antiguos heraldos de Galactus.
En lo que respecta a peripecias, nuestro héroe tuvo muchas. Pero lo que nos importa realmente es su aventura en nuestro planeta. Hace tiempo, se creó una serie que trataba sobre las andanzas de S. S. por aquí. Lo más gracioso es que Silver Surfer detestaba la Tierra. Lo que era el planeta en sí, le gustaba; pero vivir con los humanos… lo llevaba fatal. Surfer no lograba entender la sociedad y estaba hecho un lío. Y también tenía sus propios dilemas filosóficos. Y no es que “Estela Plateada” estuviera loco; es que los humanos somos… complicados.
“De todos los animales de la tierra, el hombre es el único que bebe sin tener sed, come sin tener hambre y habla sin tener nada que decir” –dijo John Steinbeck. Es verdad. La forma de actuar que tenemos a veces podría asustar a cualquiera. No hace falta que venga un personaje recubierto de papel albar (el papel de plata) para que nos demos cuenta de lo que somos. Bien podríamos ser un conjunto de genes aleatoriamente unidos, un mezclado de información y cultura, un todo de alma y espíritu (o eso dicen las religiones hindúes)… quien sabe. Bueno, al menos sabemos qué no somos. Está claro que no somos robots. No estamos programados para hacer siempre lo mismo. Somos libres de hacer lo que queramos, es decir, tenemos libre albedrío. Podemos ser maleducados, violentos, groseros, pero también podemos ser amables, pacíficos y hospitalarios. Ser lo primero es más fácil, es cierto, pero, amigo mío, si eres una mala persona, luego atiende a las consecuencias. Por desgracia, la mayoría de la gente hace caso omiso a las secuelas y opta por pasárselo bien. Por eso, Silver Surfer se habría dado un buen susto al ver ciertas cosas. Seguramente le habría encantado contemplar las dos guerras mundiales desde un cómodo sillón. O habría preferido observar cómo dos niños se pelean por un simple juguete. En cuanto a hospitalidad, probablemente le hizo gracia que las tropas americanas lo recibieran con bombas y misiles. Y notó lo racionales que somos al ver que una masa de gente se daba de golpes por su equipo de fútbol. Sí, la Tierra es un lugar precioso.
No obstante, supongo que también vería algo bueno. Puede que se enamorara, que se asombrara viendo los documentales de la 2, que se riera de un buen chiste… Surfer pudo aprender a amar la vida en todas sus formas.
Por todo esto, podemos apuntar con total certeza que nuestra especie, aunque extraña, es especial. Está en nuestra forma de actuar el que sigamos siéndolo. Pero recuerda: pase lo que pase, nunca pierdas el aprecio por la vida.
